Autism Classes

Our Autism Classes

The Preschool Autism class in St. Finbarr’s was established in September 2016, and caters to boys aged of 3-5 years of age with Autism. In 2025, we opened our Junior Autism Class. Both classes are now in our newly-renovated classrooms that cater to students’ needs. The class is supported by a Class Teacher and two to three Special Needs Assistants. There is a maximum of six children in each class.

Communication and Language

There is a strong emphasis on supporting and aiding Communication and Language, through the use of Core Boards, Pecs, Visual timetables, and Lámh. Each child has their own work station in the classroom where they practice fine motor skills, Literacy, Numeracy, and Independent activities. Children take part in group and circle time activities, and eat their lunch each day together, encouraging social skills and turn-taking.

Facilities

In 2025, we were delighted to open our newly renovated classrooms for our students. Facilities include a class sensory room, bathroom, a shared gross motor room, and a shared softplay yard area. Our sensory rooms offer a relaxing space where the boys can unwind and self-regulate.

Integration

Integration is encouraged, and some children visit Junior Infants to take part in enjoyable activities there. The boys from the older classes visit the classes at certain times too. The boys are very kind and helpful towards the students, and it’s always lovely when they come to visit.

Transition

Children in our Pre-school either transition onto Junior Infants in St. Finbarr’s or move to a Primary Autism Class or a Special School, depending on which setting is best for the child’s needs.
